I didn’t grow up with a dad who did “projects”—nor would he have wanted my help if he had. When my kids were young I began teaching my son (the oldest) how to use tools and do different kinds of “fix-it” jobs. Unfortunately, they typically ended with me in the ER and my son witnessing various degrees of blood loss –mine. So, that custom didn’t last long.
So I’m both pleased and a bit bemused that my son is a fix-it guy. He fixes various kinds of things and makes different things—often with his three boys (the girls are a bit young yet) gathered around watching and wanting to help. He often lets them help, and the boys (the oldest is almost 11) all get to use tools and build or fix things—with their dad.
I am certain he can do every task they do—and better than they can. He doesn’t need them to help. He wants them to. And they don’t have to help, they GET TO.
I hear many who claim that they belong to Jesus complaining, griping, objecting to and generally not wanting to give or to give their time to serve. I’ve even had people ask me: Do you think I have to?
But if we belong to Jesus, won’t we want to? Don’t we GET TO? We are standing by everything he does and we get to be part of it!
If you claim the Kingdom but this doesn’t resonate with you, I suggest you rate yourself on three categories: tithing (giving 10% off the top to God); internal service (that means within the body of Christ you are serving others—doing your part of the family chores); and external service (that means serving others outside the body of Christ) on a scale of 1-10 with 1=non existent and 10=doing as well as it is possible for me to do. I’m willing to bet that one or all of these are low. Pick one to start with, and commit to changing it.
Not because you have to.
But because you GET TO!
When you do, you will begin to see God changing you!
