Not growing up in the church, I’ve always found certain words and phrases a bit strange. For example, “Good Friday”. What is it? It is the day Jesus was tortured to death.
I never understood how this could be called “Good” Friday. But Christians everywhere do.
Why?
The answer is simple. What Jesus did is good.
Jesus voluntarily gave his life to die on the cross. It was a unique act–only he could do it (those who torture themselves to show their devotion to the Lord don’t get it–he had to die because they deserve their pain, and he died so they wouldn’t have to experience the same thing).
Jesus giving himself was good. It made forgiveness possible. It made it possible for us to have eternal life–with him. For us, his death meant life.
Friday is good–and Sunday. Even better!
